The Complete Guide to Nail Salon Services in Shelby Township, MI: Manicures, Pedicures & Nail Enhancements Explained

Last updated: September 2026 | By Paradise 9 Nail Spa & Salon, Shelby Township, MI

Walking into a nail salon for the first time — or trying a service you've never had before — can feel confusing. Acrylic, Gel-X, dipping powder, express pedicure, spa pedicure: what's actually the difference, and which one is right for you? This guide answers every question we hear most often at our Shelby Township nail salon, from how a manicure differs from a pedicure to how to choose between nail enhancement types and how to keep your nails healthy between visits.

1. What Happens During a Nail Salon Visit

A typical visit starts with a quick consultation — the technician asks about the look you want, your nail length preference, and any sensitivities (allergies, thin nails, past reactions to products). From there, most services follow the same basic flow: prep (shaping, cuticle care), the core treatment (polish, enhancement, or soak), and finishing touches (top coat, cuticle oil, hand or foot massage). Spa-tier services add extras like exfoliation, hot towels, paraffin treatments, or a longer massage — turning a routine appointment into a genuine self-care break.

2. Manicure 101: Types & What to Expect

A manicure focuses on the hands: shaping the nails, tidying the cuticles, and applying polish or a protective finish. The three most common types are:

Classic manicure — shaping, cuticle care, and regular polish. Best for a quick refresh.
Gel manicure — same prep, finished with a gel polish cured under UV/LED light for a longer-lasting, chip-resistant result.
Deluxe/spa manicure — adds exfoliation, a hydrating mask, and extended massage for extra relaxation.

A manicure is a good fit if your natural nails are healthy and you mainly want color, shine, and neat cuticles rather than added length or strength.

3. Pedicure 101: From Express to Spa Luxury

Pedicures follow a similar structure to manicures but focus on the feet, typically starting with a warm soak to soften skin before shaping, cuticle care, callus treatment, and polish. Options generally range from:

Express pedicure — a faster version covering the essentials, ideal for maintenance visits.
Classic pedicure — full soak, exfoliation, and massage for a more thorough treatment.
Luxury spa pedicure — extended massage, hot stones, paraffin wax, or specialty soaks (like the mimosa-and-candlelight spa pedicure experience many guests love), designed as a true relaxation ritual rather than just nail maintenance.

4. Nail Enhancements Compared: Acrylic vs. Gel-X vs. Dipping Powder

"Nail enhancement" refers to any product applied to add length, shape, or strength beyond your natural nail. The three most requested options each have distinct pros, ideal for different priorities:

Type	Best For	Feel & Finish	Typical Wear Time
Acrylic	Maximum strength & length, sculpted shapes	Firm, classic finish	3–4 weeks between fills
Gel-X / Builder Gel	A natural look and lighter feel	Lightweight, flexible, glossy	2–3 weeks
Dipping Powder	Durability with minimal odor	Smooth, strong, matte-to-glossy finish	3–4 weeks

There's no universally "best" option — it depends on how much length you want, how your natural nails respond to different products, and how much maintenance you're comfortable with. A technician can recommend the right type after checking your natural nail condition in person.

5. Nail Art & Design Options

Nail art can be as simple as a single accent nail or as detailed as a full hand-painted design. Popular styles include French tips, ombré, chrome, cat-eye, and hand-painted patterns. Most salons price design work per nail or as an add-on to a base manicure/enhancement service, so it's worth deciding on your color and inspiration photos before your appointment to keep the consultation quick.

6. How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Arrive with clean nails — but skip trimming cuticles yourself right before your visit.
Bring inspiration photos if you want a specific nail art design or color.
Avoid shaving your legs immediately before a pedicure, as freshly shaved skin can be more sensitive to salon products.
Let your technician know about any allergies, injuries, or infections before starting.
Book ahead for weekends and holidays — walk-ins are welcome, but appointments guarantee your preferred time.

7. How Often Should You Get Your Nails Done?

As a general guideline: gel manicures and dipping powder typically need a refresh every 2–3 weeks, acrylics every 3–4 weeks as nails grow out, and classic (non-gel) manicures/pedicures every 1–2 weeks if you want polish to stay chip-free. Waiting too long between enhancement fills can put extra stress on the natural nail, so regular maintenance visits matter as much as the initial service.

8. Nail Health & Aftercare Tips

Apply cuticle oil daily to keep nails and surrounding skin hydrated, especially with gel or powder services.
Wear gloves for cleaning or dishwashing to protect polish and enhancements from harsh chemicals.
Never pick or peel off gel, powder, or acrylic — this can damage the natural nail underneath. Have it professionally removed instead.
Give your natural nails an occasional break between enhancement cycles if they start to feel thin or weak.
Keep nails dry and moisturized in cold or dry weather to prevent cracking and splitting.

10. Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a manicure and a nail enhancement?

A manicure treats and polishes your natural nail. A nail enhancement (acrylic, Gel-X, or dipping powder) adds a product on top of or as an extension of the natural nail for extra length or strength.

Is Gel-X better than acrylic?

Neither is universally "better" — Gel-X tends to feel lighter and more natural, while acrylic offers maximum strength and hold for longer or more sculpted shapes. The right choice depends on your nail goals and how your natural nails respond.

How long does a full set of nails take?

Most enhancement services take 60–90 minutes depending on the type, nail art complexity, and whether removal of a previous set is needed.

Can I get a pedicure if I have a nail infection or injury?

Always tell your technician beforehand — some services may need to be adjusted or postponed, and a healthcare provider should be consulted first for active infections.

Do walk-ins get the same service quality as appointments?

Yes — walk-ins receive the same consultation, products, and technique as scheduled appointments. Booking ahead simply guarantees your preferred time slot.
